Bulgaria, Argentina Move to Boost Bilateral Economic Cooperation

Bulgaria's Economy Minister Petar Dimitrov and Argentina's Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Trade, and Worship Jorje Taiana signed Tuesday an agreement for economic cooperation. The main focus of the agreement, which was signed in the Presidential Palace in Buenos Aires in the presence of the Bulgarian President Georgi Parvanov and his Argentinian counterpart Cristina FernÃ¡ndez de Kirchner, envisages joint projects in food industries located on Bulgarian soil. The Bulgarian President Georgi Parvanov said after his meeting with President Kirchner that the two states had great potential for cooperation in the energy field, and especially when it came to nuclear energy and renewable energy sources. The Presidents of Bulgaria and Argentina declared their joint support for the accelerated signing of the strategic association agreement between the EU and the Mercosur, of which Argentina is a member together with Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay. The trade between Bulgaria and Argentina amounts to USD 110 M. Bulgaria exports to Argentina mainly chemical products such as fertilizers, and imports agricultural products. In 2005-2006 Bulgaria also imported cooper ore, which shifted the bilateral trade balance in favor of Argentina. On Wednesday Bulgaria's President and Economy Minister are going to take part in a business breakfast in the Sheraton Buenos Aires Hotel together with representatives of Argentinian companies. Earlier on Tuesday the representatives of the Mining and Geology Institute of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences and Argentina's Mining and Geology Service signed a Memorandum for Cooperation and Technical Assistance. Argentina is the first Latin American country with which Bulgaria established diplomatic relations in 1931 after some 20 000 Bulgarians emigrated there in 1920s. The Argentinian citizens of Bulgarian origin are presently estimated to be between 40 000 and 80 000. The President Parvanov explicitly thanked Argentina's authorities for their support for the Bulgarian community in the country.
