Bulgaria Welcomes New US Ambassador McEldowney

The newly appointed Ambassador of the US to Bulgaria, Nancy McEldowney, landed Thursday at Sofia Airport, accompanied by her husband and two daughters.
"Good afternoon! I am very happy to be here with you," were the first words of HE McEldowney, pronounced in excellent Bulgarian.
"It is a privilege for me to represent the US in Bulgaria," she added.
"From now on, we have many important tasks to accomplish such as safeguarding regional security and promoting the mutual understanding between our two nations," the ambassador explained.
"I am looking forward to starting my work here," McEldowney ended, again in Bulgarian.
On July 25th, 2008 she was officially sworn in to the post, replacing John Beyrle.
She was appointed Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Bulgaria in January, 2008 by President George W. Bush.
The appointment culminates her diplomatic career with the US State Department.
Nancy McEldowney graduated in 1976 from Clearwater High School in Florida and received her bachelor's degree from New College and her master's degrees from Columbia University and the National Defense University.
Previous posts include: Deputy chief of the United States Mission in Ankara, Turkey; Office of the Secretary of Defense at the Pentagon; and director of European Affairs on the National Security Council at the White House; and overseas posts including Baku, Azerbaijan; Bonn, Germany; and Cairo.
She is married to Tim Hayes, a retired U.S. Air Force pilot who flew F-5 and F-15 aircraft, and has two daughters - Jessica, 7, and Alyssa, 2.
