Stasi Files Holders Dismiss Bulgarian Connection in Pope Shooting by Sofia News Agency www.novinite.com

Stasi files contain no evidence of a Bulgarian connection in the 1981 assassination attempt against Pope John Paul II, according to a press release of Stasi archives holders, circulated to Bulgarian journalists by the head of the Bulgarian State Commission on Information Security. The people, who handle the documents of the former communist East German secret service, say so, Tsveta Markova said upon her return from a visit in Berlin.Markova explained that her planned visit to Germany happily coincided with the resurrection of the Bulgarian connection issue, which was raised anew in the wake of media and politicians' "manipulations".Bulgarian officials have repeatedly dismissed allegations of Bulgarian involvement in the shooting against the pope, saying that declassified documents of former East German spy agency Stasi dispose of no such evidence. The sad news of Pope John Paul II death came just days after Italian media circulated a series of reports, implicating Bulgaria was part of the plot for assassination in 1981.Many Italian sources have indicated that Stasi files confirmed the direct involvement of Soviet KGB in masterminding the assassination and coordinating the participation of erstwhile Bulgarian communist secret services. These, in turn, resorted to Turkish extremists as the actual executors of the plan.Italy announced plans to reopen an inquiry into the 1981 attempted murder of Pope John Paul II and approached Bulgaria after it vowed to grant it access to classified documents. The Italian investigators are positive that the Turkish mafia was serving the Bulgarian and Soviet secret services. Interior Minister Petkanov advised the Italians to turn directly to the German service that handles Stasi archives. |
